Theory and models of crop yield loss from weed competition have led to decision models to help growers choose cost-effective weed management. These models are available for multiple-species weed communities in a single season of several crops. Growers also rely on crop rotation for weed control, yet theory and models of weed population dynamics have not led to similar tools for planning of crop rotations for cost-effective weed management. Obstacles have been the complexity of modeling the dynamics of multiple populations of weed species compared to a single species and lack of data. We developed a method to use limited, readily observed data to simulate population dynamics and crop yield loss of multiple-species weed communities in response to crop rotation, tillage system, and specific weed management tactics. Our method is based on the general theory of density dependence of plant productivity and extensive use of rectangular hyperbolic equations for describing crop yield loss as a function of weed density. Only two density-independent parameters are required for each species to represent differences in seed bank mortality, emergence, and maximum seed production. One equation is used to model crop yield loss and density-dependent weed seed production as a function of crop and weed density, relative time of weed and crop emergence, and differences among species in competitive ability. The model has been parameterized for six crops and 15 weeds, and limited evaluation indicates predictions are accurate enough to highlight potential weed problems and solutions when comparing alternative crop rotations for a field. The model has been incorporated into a decision support tool for whole-farm management so growers in the Central Great Plains of the United States can compare alternative crop rotations and how their choice influences farm income, herbicide use, and control of weeds in their fields.

Background
Mental and substance use disorders are common and often persistent, with many emerging in early life. Compared to adult mental and substance use disorders, the global burden attributable to these disorders in children and youth has received relatively little attention.
MethodData from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 was used to investigate the burden of mental and substance disorders in children and youth aged 0–24 years. Burden was estimated in terms of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), derived from the sum of years lived with disability (YLDs) and years of life lost (YLLs).
ResultsGlobally, mental and substance use disorders are the leading cause of disability in children and youth, accounting for a quarter of all YLDs (54.2 million). In terms of DALYs, they ranked 6th with 55.5 million DALYs (5.7%) and rose to 5th when mortality burden of suicide was reattributed. While mental and substance use disorders were the leading cause of DALYs in high-income countries (HICs), they ranked 7th in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to mortality attributable to infectious diseases.
ConclusionsMental and substance use disorders are significant contributors to disease burden in children and youth across the globe. As reproductive health and the management of infectious diseases improves in LMICs, the proportion of disease burden in children and youth attributable to mental and substance use disorders will increase, necessitating a realignment of health services in these countries.

Maize (Zea mays L.) is the major staple crop in Timor-Leste, but yields are low, averaging 1·0–1·7 t/ha, and losses during storage are high from maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky) damage. The current research, assessing both weevil damage and management options, studied household storage of traditional and introduced maize varieties in 18 farmer groups for 33 weeks, and then evaluated the weevil damage in cobs stored for 9 months of 19 populations from different multi-location yield trials in 2007 and 2010. Storage of shelled grain in airtight containers for 33 weeks had no weevil damage on-farm. In contrast, storing shelled maize in a woven sack was the worst storage method with an average of 0·96 of grain attacked by weevils by Week 33, with local and introduced varieties damaged similarly. Shelled grain stored in a woven sack were infested significantly more than in traditional storage methods husked on the cob – above a fireplace, in a tree or an elevated house. Importantly, modern varieties were damaged more extensively by weevils than local maize types when the husked maize was stored using traditional methods. In the yield trials, grain weevil damage averaged 0·39 in both years after storage in the husk for 9 months. Varietal and location effects were significant for proportion of weevil damage, but the interaction effect was not significant in either year. The broadsense heritabilities were intermediate/high for proportion of weevil-damaged grain (H2=0·81 in 2007 and 0·59 in 2010), and there is potential that populations can be found combining a substantial yield increase with no increase in weevil susceptibility for households using traditional storage methods. For those households with access to airtight storage systems, the results emphasize the need to exploit the interaction of variety with storage method to benefit from the yield advantage of introduced varieties through the concurrent dissemination of improved seed with subsidized, airtight storage drums.

Background.
The main aim of this paper is to compare and contrast the methodological approaches of the new Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study (GBD 2010) with the original study conducted for 1990 (GBD 1990), in terms of calculating burden for mental and substance use disorders.
Methods. We reviewed the conceptual and methodological changes to GBD burden calculations in the GBD 2010 study, compared with previous studies. We then discuss the possible implications of these changes with respect to burden estimates for mental and substance use disorders.
Results. It is not possible to compare burden estimates arising from the GBD 1990 study with the most recent burden estimates. There have been important advances in the categorisation and definition of mental disorders, and the input and computation of epidemiological models for disease distribution. There have also been major changes to conceptual and social value choices aimed at addressing concerns that arose following publication of earlier GBD studies.
Conclusion.Advancements to the GBD conceptual framework and method of calculating burden estimates has led to more accurate and equitable consideration of the burden for mental and substance use disorders. Proposed annual updates of GBD estimates by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation provide an opportunity to continue to advance the evidence base that underpins the quantification of disease burden.

The prevalence of bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) was determined in 113 Michigan dairy herds by ELISA testing for anti-BLV antibodies in milk. Additionally, an interview regarding management practices with cooperating herd managers identified farm-level variables thought to be associated with prevalence of BLV. Twenty-three risk factors (P ⩽ 0·1) were identified on one-way ANOVA or simple linear regression. Multivariate analysis identified several management practices whose predictive value for increased prevalence of BLV may relate to transmission among herd mates, e.g. reuse of hypodermic needles, lack of fly control, gouge dehorning and increased use of injections in dry cows. Additionally, exclusive breeding of heifers with artificial insemination was associated with decreased BLV prevalence, as compared with at least some use of natural service by a bull. Although intervention studies are needed before causal relationships can be concluded, and unaccounted variables related to transmission exist among dairy herds, these findings suggest management practices that may help dairy producers reduce the transmission of BLV within their herds.

Molecules exhibiting strong two-photon absorption hold great potential for a wide range of applications including two-photon fluorescence imaging, three-dimensional (3D) optical data storage, and 3D microfabrication. We have observed two-photon absorptivities as high as 1500×10− 50 cm4 s/photon in bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives that are correlated to simultaneous charge transfer from the end groups to the polyene bridge in the molecule. Many of these molecules are also excellent photoexcitable electron donors that can initiate charge-transfer reactions with acrylate monomers. Marcus theory is used to describe the efficiency of these charge-transfer reactions. Polymerization rates have also been measured and we show that these twophoton chromophores display increased sensitivity and recording speed over conventional UV photo-initiators. The fabrication of complex, three-dimensional structures by twophoton polymerization is demonstrated and discussed in the context of advanced photonic applications.

We have studied the near-edge optical response of a LT-grown GaAs sample which was deposited at 300 °C on a Si substrate, and then annealed at 600 °C. The Si was etched away to leave a 3-micron free standing GaAs film. Femtosecond transmission measurements were made using an equal pulse technique at four wavelengths between 825 and 870 nm. For each wavelength we observe both a multipicosecond relaxation time, as well as a shorter relaxation time which is less than 100 femtoseconds.

We report the first application of Soft X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (SXPS) to probe the bonding at epitaxial, bi-metallic interfaces with atomic-layer spatial selectivity. Specifically, we have measured the W(4f)7/2 levels of interfacial tungsten atoms for (1×1)Fe/W(110), (1×1)Ni/W(110), and (1×1)PtW(110). For clean W(110), the surface atoms exhibit a W(4f)7/2 peak at -320 meV binding energy with respect to the bulk W(4f)7/2 peak. Upon formation of the metallic overlayers, the interfacial tungsten atoms contribute W(4f)7/2 peaks at -225 meV (Fe/W), -140 meV (Ni/W), and +70 meV (Pt/W) with respect to the bulk W(4f)7/2 peak. The systematic reduction in the binding energy difference between interfacial and bulk tungsten atoms for Fe, Ni, and Pt correlates with increasing heats of adsorption on W(110), as determined by Temperature Programmed Desorption. This suggests that SXPS, in combination with first principles calculations and Born-Haber thermochemical cycle analyses, can be used as a non-destructive probe of bi-metallic interfacial bonding energies.

Recent advances in spin-sensitive spectroscopie techniques combined with the rapidly expanding capabilities to synthesize novel materials utilizing molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are stimulating new interest in magnetism and magnetic materials. Epitaxial growth offers opportunities to stabilize and study crystal phases of elemental magnetic materials which do not naturally occur in nature, and to vary the crystal parameters and composition of epitaxial films in precisely controlled ways. Multilayer superlattice films can also be fabricated using MBE. These structures offer unprecedented new opportunities to explore the relationship between crystal structure and various magnetic properties such as spontaneous magnetization, the Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy in well characterized systems. The present paper reviews some of the more recent work on thin film magnetic systems including structure analysis of film quality, new techniques for probing the electronic and magnetic properties of the films and the important role large scale numerical calculations are beginning to play in guiding the choice of magnetic systems for study.

Selected interface phenomena associated with metal semiconductor contacts are discussed in relation to recent experimental and theoretical work on the electronic properties, interface formation and structure, and device characteristics of nickel-silicon interfaces. Evidence is presented which suggests that a well-defined interfacial phase is present at all nickel silicide-silicon boundaries formed by deposition of nickel atoms onto silicon surfaces. The existence of this phase is shown to account for several important interface properties of the nickel silicide system including selective growth, the rotational twin structure of epitaxial films and the observed invariance of the nickel silicide-silicon Schottky barrier height as the silicide contact stoichiometry is varied.
